Graphite Pencils and Acrylic Paint?
I am doing my latest project on canvas. Brushing gesso onto the canvas, sanding it down, and sketching my work on with black graphite pencils. . . . The thing is. . . I want to incorporate some color on only some of the images, like those black and white pictures that have one object in color. But I don't know how to go about this. Can I make regular acrylic paints work? or do I need something else? If so, what would you suggest? (please idiot proof this for me) LoL! Thanks. =)
This will work just fine IF you seal the graphite after drawing, which you should do anyway. You can use a workable fixative (spray, several coats) once you're done drawing, to hold the graphite in place, and then brush over it with thinned gel medium (matte or gloss, depending what you want). Or acrylic varnish, which is pretty much the same thing. Once it's dry, you can paint on it with acrylic.
I'm wondering whether the graphite on gessoed canvas is really the best idea... the main concern would be the smudging. Also, just because of the texture, it's not the most desirable drawing surface. If you sand it down nice and smooth, though, it should work.
A really enjoyable technique is to gesso over a drawing and then sand back to reveal it. You get a different line quality and more depth. Maybe for another project...
